Final Fantasy 14 Launch Failure: What We Can Learn

final fantasy 14 a realm reborn

What we can learn from the Final Fantasy 14 launch failure

This weekend I was able to catch the Final Fantasy 14 documentary from noclip

From the view of a brand marketer, the biggest thing that turned that ship around IMO was transparency.

We see it time and time again, gamers are incredibly forgiving. We might be mad that a game we were looking forward to is in poor condition, but as long as their is communication and the project doesn’t get abandoned, we tend to let go of the anger. (See Cyberpunk and Halo MCC & Infinite as examples)

Apologize, reveal the roadmap, and get to work.

You’re going to get hit with a lot of criticism, it’s to be expected. Keep giving your attention to the loyal fans.

Preferably, inside a community group on Discord or another platform, communicate to the fans on a weekly basis what the team is working on, provide patch release dates and for bonus points, show behind the scenes footage.

Remember, people connect with people. SHOW the community what you’re doing, don’t just tell them. This makes the fans feel involved with the process.

This level of transparency and communication with loyal FF fans was crucial for the continued success of the studio.

I could talk about so much more related to this documentary but I’ll save that for another time.

Congrats to the entire FF14 team for turning that ship around and creating such an unforgettable marketing campaign (A Realm Reborn).
